The Perfect Taste of Summer

Snelgrove Ice Cream was the best ever. The flavors were fresh and delicious, the texture smooth and creamy.  It was so much fun to sit at the counter and order a triple-thick Burnt Almond Fudge Shake (my favorite) or stand in long lines for 10 cent cones. (Bear Lake Raspberry - available only in season).  The vintage sign and landmark ice cream cones remain; but sadly, Snelgrove Ice Cream is only a fond memory. We have become ice cream connoisseurs and making ice cream is a  favorite family tradition. It's fun and easy and the perfect taste of summer.   White Mountain Freezers are a must and of course a great recipe.  Here are a few of our favorites:

BURNT ALMOND FUDGE ICE CREAM
3 cups sugar
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
2 cups evaporated milk
6 cups half and half
4 cups whipping cream
3/4 teaspoon almond extract
1 cup toasted almonds
Combine all ingredients except almonds.  Freeze in ice cream freezer.  Add almonds.

**RASPBERRY ICE CREAM
Juice of 3 lemons
3 1/2 cups sugar
2 cups sour cream
Mix until smooth, then add:
2 quarts half and half
6 cups **raspberries mashed
Freeze and enjoy.
**Strawberries are also delicious

LIME AND LEMON ICE CREAM
8 cups milk
3 cups sugar
2/3 cup fresh lemon juice
1/3 cup fresh lime juice
1/2 teaspoon lemon extract.
Mix and freeze.

A True OUTLIER

My favorite read this summer was Outliers, The Story of Success, written by Malcolm Gladwell.  Simply stated, it is a book about men and women whose experiences are not ordinary.  They seize opportunities and through vision, hard work and perseverance, accomplish great things.  I love the idea that intellect is valuable but that hard work plays a more important role for those whose accomplishments are extraordinary.

Yesterday it was announced that Steve Jobs was stepping down as CEO of Apple. I admire his accomplishments. He really has "changed the world" by simplifying our computer experiences, especially for "technicapped" people like me.

This is what he said about simplicity:

"That's been one of my mantras - focus and simplicity.  Simple can be harder than complex; you have to work hard to get your thinking clean, to make it simple.  But it's worth it in the end because once you get there you can move mountains."

Tomorrow my son leaves for college.  He is still figuring out what will be his life's work.  He wants to discover a field he enjoys, gain the knowledge and skills necessary to make a difference, a unique contribution.  I love Steve Jobs' outlook on meaningful work.

"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the only way to be satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.  And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.  If you haven't found it yet, keep looking.  Don't settle.  As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.  And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.  So keep looking until you find it.  Don't settle."

Just one more favorite:  "Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me.  Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful...that's what matters."

I wish Steve Jobs well and honor his work.  I send my son off to school; I know he will work hard, find his place and do wonderful things. Move mountains.  Steve and David -Godspeed.

Bee Line: To move swiftly in a direct, straight course.

When I was a young girl I asked my mother what people would call me when I was an adult.  I worried about it because I didn't have a "proper" name.  My grandchildren gave me the title, "BB"; a perfect a.k.a.

I love bees and admire their hard work, sacrifice and of course,  the honey.  We actually have several beehives in our yard.  It's wonderful to watch the bees dance as they go out in search of nectar and then bee-line home to the hive.
